Many of you know that I initially moved to Philadelphia from Colombia, South America. Then, in 1999 my husband and I decided to fulfill our dream of traveling throughout Southeast Asia. We sold our business, put our belongings in storage and moved to Bangkok, Thailand with our 2 year old child. Of course, it was both more cumbersome and more rewarding than we ever imagined! Traveling has taught me to stay open minded and also offered incredible inspiration. It was while visiting Singapore that I came across a book about the psychology of design. This book propelled my passion to start designing homes with a higher purpose as a career and continues to guide my work.

Without the convenience of Google at the time, I struggled with finding where and what to purchase for our one year adventure. I recommend staying cognizant of the length of time you will spend in your home, this should guide your investment so you don’t waste money in the long run. To minimize disruptions and stress, I encourage making a list of must haves and hiring experts so you can enjoy the process. When you finally get to shopping, I suggest staying open to new possibilities, you never know what you may find outside of your comfort zone. In fact, the multiple challenges, lessons learned, stresses and joys I experienced first-hand during my two international relocations were very helpful during my last three recent moves within Philadelphia.

Lately, and especially around the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been seeing an influx of New Yorkers moving to Philly. According to CBS Philadelphia and data from Unacast “about twice as many New Yorkers (roughly 7,500) moved to Philly in 2020 than Philadelphians did to NYC.” The idea of starting fresh and the reality of designing your life in a completely new space can be daunting, whether you are moving nationally or internationally.
